Here’s What Your Car Is Trying to Tell You

There it is.

You start your car, glance at the dashboard, and suddenly notice that little orange engine-shaped light staring back at you.

The check engine light.

Immediately, your brain starts filling in the blanks.

Is my engine about to die? How much is this going to cost? Can I still drive to work? Is it just the gas cap? Didn't I just have this car serviced? Maybe if I turn the car off and restart it, it'll disappear...

And our personal favorite:

Maybe if I ignore it long enough, the bulb will burn out.

Technically, that would make the light go away.

It would not, however, fix your car.

"Hey, your purge valve isn't working correctly. It's not an emergency, but let's get that taken care of."

It just turns on a mysterious orange light and lets your imagination handle the rest.

But it does mean your vehicle's computer has detected something outside its expected operating parameters, and the smartest thing you can do is find out why .

Let's take some of the mystery—and hopefully some of the anxiety—out of that little orange light.

What Does the Check Engine Light Actually Mean?

Modern vehicles have multiple computers constantly monitoring systems throughout the vehicle.

One of the most important is the engine control module, often called the ECM or PCM depending on the vehicle.

It monitors information from sensors and systems involving things such as:

Engine performance
Fuel delivery
Ignition
Airflow
Emissions
Exhaust
Transmission operation
Engine temperature
Evaporative emissions

When the computer sees something operating outside its expected range, it may store a diagnostic trouble code , commonly called a DTC.

Depending on the problem, it may also illuminate the check engine light.

Think of the check engine light as your car saying:

"Something isn't right. Somebody needs to check this out."

Notice what it isn't saying:

"Replace the oxygen sensor."

That's an important distinction.

A Trouble Code Is Not a Diagnosis

This is probably one of the biggest misunderstandings we see in auto repair.

Someone plugs a scanner into the vehicle and gets a code such as:

P0302 – Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected

Then comes the conclusion:

"Great! It needs a spark plug."

Maybe.

It could also be a failing ignition coil, fuel injector problem, wiring issue, vacuum leak, compression problem, mechanical engine issue or something else.

The code identifies what the computer noticed .

It doesn't necessarily identify what caused it .

Here's another example.

Suppose your vehicle has a code indicating that an oxygen sensor is reporting a lean condition.

That doesn't automatically mean the oxygen sensor is bad.

The sensor may be doing its job perfectly and reporting a problem caused by unmetered air entering the engine, low fuel pressure, an intake leak or another issue.

Replacing the sensor without testing could leave you with:

a brand-new oxygen sensor...and the exact same check engine light.

That's why at Rock's, we don't believe in guessing.

A scan tool gives a technician clues.

Testing confirms the answer.

That distinction can save you from replacing perfectly good parts—and paying for repairs that don't solve your problem.

First Question: Is the Check Engine Light Solid or Flashing?

This is the first thing we want you to notice.

Because these two situations can mean very different things.

A Solid Check Engine Light

If your check engine light comes on and stays illuminated, the vehicle's computer has detected a fault.

If the car seems to be running normally, a solid light generally doesn't mean you need to immediately pull over and call a tow truck.

But don't ignore it.

Schedule an appointment to have the vehicle checked.

The problem could be relatively minor today but become more expensive if left unresolved.

You should also pay attention to anything else the vehicle is doing.

Continuing to drive can turn one repair into several.

When you're unsure whether it's safe to continue driving, call your repair shop and describe exactly what's happening.

Sometimes the least expensive decision you can make is paying for a tow.

Can I Drive With My Check Engine Light On?

The answer is:

It depends.

We know. Everybody loves that answer.

If the light is solid and the vehicle is running normally, you can often drive it carefully long enough to get it inspected.

But if you notice any of the following, you should reconsider continuing to drive:

Flashing check engine light
Severe shaking
Major loss of power
Overheating
Oil-pressure warning
Loud knocking
Strong fuel smell

A check engine light combined with another warning light or major symptom changes the situation.

First Thing to Check: Your Gas Cap

Yes, sometimes it really can be that simple.

Your fuel system is designed to contain fuel vapors rather than allowing them to escape into the atmosphere. The evaporative emissions system—usually called the EVAP system —monitors this process.

A loose, damaged or improperly sealing gas cap can sometimes trigger an EVAP-related trouble code and illuminate the check engine light.

If your light appeared shortly after getting gas:

Make sure the gas cap is installed correctly.
Look for obvious damage to the cap or seal.
Tighten it according to the manufacturer's design.

But here's something many people don't realize:

The check engine light may not immediately turn off after you tighten the cap.

The computer may need to run its EVAP self-test again, which can require several drive cycles and specific conditions.

And if the light remains on, don't keep buying gas caps.

There are numerous other components in the EVAP system that can cause similar codes.

Common Reasons Your Check Engine Light Comes On

There are hundreds—sometimes thousands—of possible diagnostic trouble codes depending on the vehicle.

So this isn't an exhaustive list.

But these are some common areas technicians investigate.

1. Loose or Faulty Gas Cap

Let's start with the inexpensive possibility.

A damaged or loose gas cap can allow fuel vapors to escape and trigger an EVAP code.

Possible repair: Tighten or replace the cap if testing confirms it's the problem.

Cost compared with other possibilities?

Let's just say this is the one everybody hopes for.

2. EVAP System Leak

If it isn't the gas cap, the evaporative emissions system contains hoses, valves, sensors and other components that can leak or malfunction.

Very small EVAP leaks can be especially tricky.

Sometimes technicians use a smoke machine to introduce safe diagnostic smoke into the system and locate a leak that would be almost impossible to see otherwise.

Possible repairs: Repair a leaking hose or connection, replace a failed purge or vent valve, repair wiring, or replace another failed EVAP component based on testing.

3. Faulty Oxygen Sensor

Oxygen sensors monitor the oxygen content in the exhaust and provide information the computer uses to manage engine operation and monitor catalytic-converter performance.

They live in a very hot, harsh environment and can eventually fail.

But remember our earlier rule:

An oxygen-sensor code doesn't automatically mean "replace the oxygen sensor."

The technician needs to determine whether the sensor itself is failing or whether it's accurately reporting another problem.

Possible repair: Oxygen sensor replacement—if testing confirms it.

4. Engine Misfire

A misfire means one or more cylinders aren't contributing properly.

You may notice:

Shaking
Rough idle
Hesitation
Reduced power
Flashing check engine light

Possible causes include ignition, fuel, electrical and mechanical problems.

6. Failing Ignition Coil

Ignition coils generate the high voltage needed for the spark plugs.

A failing coil can cause a cylinder to misfire.

7. Mass Airflow Sensor Problems

The mass airflow sensor helps the vehicle's computer determine how much air is entering the engine.

What About the Free Code Scan at the Parts Store?

A free code scan can be useful.

It can tell you which diagnostic trouble codes are stored in the vehicle.

What it usually cannot do is determine the root cause of the problem.

Suppose the scan produces:

P0171 – System Too Lean

That doesn't mean there's a "P0171 part" hiding under the hood waiting to be replaced.

The technician still needs to determine why the engine is running lean—or why the computer believes it is.

The difference is important:

Code reading tells us where to begin.

Diagnosis tells us what needs to be repaired.

Please Don't Clear the Code Before Bringing the Car In

We understand the temptation.

You have a scanner.

You see the "CLEAR CODES" button.

It's practically begging to be pushed.

But diagnostic information stored in the computer can be valuable.

Clearing codes may also erase freeze-frame information and reset readiness monitors.

That can make diagnosis harder—especially with intermittent problems.

If you're planning to bring the vehicle in, leave the information there whenever possible.

It's evidence.

Don't clean up the crime scene before the detective arrives.

Can Disconnecting the Battery Fix a Check Engine Light?

It may make the light disappear temporarily on some vehicles.

That isn't the same thing as fixing the problem.

If the condition remains, the computer will likely detect it again and turn the light back on.

Disconnecting the battery can also reset learned values, readiness monitors and other settings.

The goal isn't to make the warning light disappear.

The goal is to determine why it appeared .

Cooler Days, Open Roads: Drive and Discover 10 Fall Family “Field Trips” Within a Road Trip of Covington

There is something almost magical about the first Louisiana morning when you step outside and realize the air is…slightly less offensive.

We aren't talking sweaters and hot cocoa just yet. This is Louisiana, after all. “Fall weather” may simply mean you can stand outside for ten minutes without questioning every decision that led you there.

But we'll take it!

Those of you who know Angie know one thing for sure: she loves a good family adventure! Give her a free Saturday and she’s probably already figuring out where the family can go, what they can see, and—most importantly—where they can eat along the way.

It doesn’t have to be a big vacation, either. Some of the best memories come from those little day trips when you pile everyone into the car, head somewhere you’ve never been (or somewhere you haven’t visited in years), learn something new, eat something good, and come home tired with a camera roll full of pictures.

And after surviving another Louisiana summer, that first hint of cooler weather practically feels like an invitation to GO SOMEWHERE!

So Angie helped us put together a Rock’s-style fall bucket list: 10 family “field trips” within an easy road trip of Covington —with animals, gardens, classic cars, Louisiana history, marine life, vintage treasures, and plenty of opportunities to make some memories along the way.

Some are perfect for younger kids. Some will keep teenagers interested. And a few might have the adults saying, “Okay, this one is really for me.”

So grab the family, pack some snacks, fill up the tank, and start planning your next adventure.

Because around here, we believe your vehicle shouldn’t just get you to work and back—it should help take you to the good stuff, too.

Most are within roughly 100 miles of Covington. We made one deliberate exception: Avery Island . It's beyond our 100-mile goal by road, but it's such a uniquely Louisiana day trip that it deserves the extra miles.

So fill up the tank, grab some snacks, argue over who's controlling the playlist, and hit the road.

1. Go on Safari at Global Wildlife Center — Folsom, Louisiana

Global Wildlife Center

You don't have to drive very far from Covington to feel like you've gone somewhere completely different.

Global Wildlife Center in Folsom encompasses about 900 acres and is home to thousands of free-roaming animals. Instead of walking from enclosure to enclosure like a traditional zoo, families can board a covered safari wagon and travel through the preserve while animals come right up to the vehicle.

And we mean right up to it .

Depending on the animals' moods that day, you might find yourself feeding giraffes, bison, zebras, camels, llamas, elands and other animals while your guide teaches you about them.

That's our kind of field trip.

The standard safari wagon experience lasts around 75 minutes, and Global Wildlife also offers more intimate private tours aboard Pinzgauer vehicles. Families can also look into experiences such as its capybara encounter and kangaroo Walkabout.

Why fall is a great time to go

Much of this adventure is outdoors, so we'd happily trade a 96-degree August afternoon for a breezy October one.

It's especially good for families with kids of different ages because little kids think they're feeding animals, older kids can actually learn something, and adults discover they're just as excited about a giraffe sticking its head near them as the children are.

Rock's Field Trip Tip: Buy some animal feed. Watching the kids carefully ration it for approximately three minutes before dumping half the bucket into one animal's mouth is part of the experience.

2. Spend the Day at Audubon Zoo — New Orleans

If you haven't visited Audubon Zoo in a while, fall is a great excuse to go back.

The beautiful Uptown New Orleans zoo offers everything from African animals and primates to Jaguar Jungle and the wonderfully Louisiana-specific Louisiana Swamp.

It's also a much different experience when you're not trying to sprint from one shady spot to another.

Make this an actual family field trip by having each child choose one animal beforehand and become the family's “expert” on that species for the day.

Special Fall 2026 Events

There's quite a bit happening at the Zoo this fall.

World Gorilla Day is September 19, and Celebración Latina follows September 20 with music, dancing, performances, food and cultural displays.

Then comes one of the Zoo's biggest fall traditions: Boo at the Zoo, October 16–18, 2026.

Friday, October 16 is the new Li'l Boo Friday , geared especially toward younger trick-or-treaters, with daytime activities followed by an early evening outdoor movie. The classic Boo at the Zoo takes place Saturday and Sunday with trick-or-treating, animals, costumes and Halloween activities throughout the Zoo.

That's a pretty good excuse to put on a costume and go see an elephant.

3. Hunt for Treasure at The Lucky Rabbit — Hattiesburg, Mississippi

This one is for the family who likes their field trips a little weird.

And we mean that as a compliment.

The Lucky Rabbit in downtown Hattiesburg isn't simply an antique store. It's roughly 40,000 square feet of antiques, vintage finds, clothing, collectibles, furniture, pop-culture nostalgia and enormous themed displays spread across two historic buildings.

You can go looking for an old license plate and somehow end up taking family pictures inside a recreated TV or movie set.

The displays change, so even families who have been before can find something new.

Make it a fall treasure hunt

Give everybody a small budget and a mission.

Who can find:

The weirdest automotive item?

Something older than Grandma?

The most ridiculous piece of home décor?

Something that used to be in everyone's house?

The best item under $10?

Nobody even realizes they're learning about history.

The Lucky Rabbit is primarily a weekend destination , currently open Saturdays and Sundays. Its First Saturday Street Market adds more than 35 outdoor vendors, food trucks and additional shopping from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month.

If your schedule lines up, that's the weekend we'd choose.

Rock's Field Trip Tip: Don't plan to “just pop in for 20 minutes.” That's not how The Lucky Rabbit works.

4. Meet Dolphins and Stingrays at Ocean Adventures — Gulfport, Mississippi

Here's one that combines entertainment with a genuinely interesting science lesson.

Ocean Adventures Marine Park in Gulfport is operated by the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies, a nonprofit involved in marine conservation, research, education and rescue.

Families can see dolphins and sea lions interact with their trainers, visit a ray pool, explore touch pools, see tropical birds and visit the Discovery Center.

The current 2026 programming includes dolphin and sea lion shows, stingray talks, bird presentations, a Discovery Center and opportunities to feed parakeets.

For families who homeschool—or just have a kid who asks approximately 4,762 questions about animals—there's plenty here to turn into a science day.

Talk about marine mammals on the ride over.

Learn about rescue and rehabilitation.

Compare sharks, rays and bony fish.

Then go touch a stingray.

That's a field trip we'd have gladly taken as kids.

5. Experience Cruisin' The Coast — Mississippi Gulf Coast

Okay, car people.

This one was obviously making the Rock's list.

Cruisin' The Coast celebrates its 30th anniversary October 4–11, 2026 , and the Mississippi Gulf Coast basically turns into one enormous rolling car show.

More than 10,000 registered vehicles participated in 2025, with antique, classic and hot rod vehicles cruising the roughly 30-mile beachside stretch of Highway 90.

For 2026, events stretch across Gulfport, Biloxi, Ocean Springs, Bay St. Louis, D'Iberville, Pass Christian, Pascagoula and other Coast communities. The schedule includes cruise-ins, live entertainment, a swap meet, an auto auction and numerous special events.

Best of all for families who just want to watch?

Spectating is free.

Turn it into an automotive field trip

Instead of simply looking at cars, challenge the kids to spot:

A car older than Mom or Dad.

A vehicle from every decade.

The oldest car they can find.

A car with fins.

A station wagon.

A Volkswagen Beetle.

The strangest paint job.

Their dream car.

Rock may need considerably more supervision than the children to make sure he doesn't come home with another project.

6. Explore the New Orleans Botanical Garden — City Park

Fall doesn't have to mean pumpkins and haunted houses.

Sometimes it's just nice to walk outside without melting.

The New Orleans Botanical Garden in City Park is a beautiful option for a slower family day. The roughly 10-acre garden includes formal gardens, sculptures, a conservatory, seasonal plantings and the Historic New Orleans Train Garden.

For families, we'd especially consider a weekend visit because the model trains are typically operated on Saturdays and Sundays.

Fall Garden Festival — October 3, 2026

This is probably the day we'd circle on the calendar.

The Fall Garden Festival takes place Saturday, October 3, from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. The Botanical Garden will host more than 50 vendors along with plant sales, educational programs, arts and crafts, cooking demonstrations, live music and gardening experts.

That turns a pretty walk through the gardens into a full-fledged fall outing.

And because you're already in City Park, you can easily stretch the trip into a longer day.

7. Spend a Day Under the Sea at Mississippi Aquarium — Gulfport

If Louisiana fall decides to impersonate Louisiana summer—or you get one of those rainy weekends—head to Gulfport and make it an aquarium day.

Mississippi Aquarium gives families a chance to explore aquatic environments and wildlife while sneaking quite a bit of science into the trip.

And Fall 2026 has several special programs worth noting.

The aquarium's Aqua Tots program for ages 3–5 continues through the fall, including stingrays on September 15, turtles on October 20, millipedes on November 17 and seahorses on December 15.

There's also a packed fall calendar that currently includes Mermaids at MSAQ , Family FIN Night, ZZZs by the Sea, Homeschool Days + Learning Labs, Sensory Day and other programming.

For homeschool families in particular, those October 14 and November 11 Homeschool Days are worth investigating.

Bonus idea: Pair Mississippi Aquarium with Cruisin' The Coast in early October and you've got marine biology for the kids and thousands of classic cars for Dad.

8. Take a Swamp Adventure Near Slidell

We live next to one of the most interesting ecosystems in America, yet it's easy to forget how extraordinary it is because…well, it's home.

A fall swamp tour is a great opportunity to change that.

The Honey Island Swamp area near Slidell gives families a completely different perspective on south Louisiana. Instead of visiting animals in exhibits, you're entering their habitat.

Depending on conditions and the day, families can watch for alligators, turtles, birds and other native wildlife while learning about wetlands, waterways, native plants and the role Louisiana's swamps play in our environment.

This is an especially fun “field trip” for Louisiana kids because it gives them a chance to learn about the ecosystem in their own backyard.

Try this with the kids

Before you leave, have everyone predict how many different animal species you'll see.

Bring binoculars.

Keep a list.

And make somebody besides Mom responsible for taking pictures.

Fall's milder temperatures can make being on the water much more pleasant than the middle of summer.

9. Visit the Abita Mystery House + Make an Abita Springs Day

You don't actually have to travel 100 miles to have a memorable field trip.

Sometimes weird is right down the road.

The Abita Mystery House is part museum, part roadside attraction and part giant collection of things that make you say:

“Why does this exist?”

Which, naturally, means kids love it.

It's filled with folk art, homemade inventions, vintage arcade machines, strange collections, odd creatures and wonderfully bizarre Louisiana roadside Americana.

Don't expect a polished museum.

That's the point.

Pair it with a walk around Abita Springs, the Trailhead, lunch and maybe a little time on the Tammany Trace, and you've got an inexpensive local adventure that doesn't require spending half the day in the car.

This is also a fun reminder that a family “field trip” doesn't have to be elaborate. Sometimes the best outings are simply exploring places close to home that you've driven past 100 times and never actually visited.

10. Make the Longer Drive to Avery Island & Jungle Gardens

We're breaking our own rule for number ten.

Avery Island is outside our roughly 100-mile radius by road from Covington , but we're including it because it's one of those Louisiana destinations every family should experience at least once.

And fall is a wonderful time to do it.

Jungle Gardens covers more than 170 acres of Avery Island and combines botanical gardens, wildlife habitat and Louisiana history.

Families can follow the roughly three-mile self-guided driving route and stop to explore live oaks, bamboo, lagoons, marshes, seasonal flowers and wildlife.

One of the most memorable stops is the centuries-old Buddha statue, which arrived at Avery Island in the 1930s.

Then there's Bird City , the historic egret sanctuary associated with conservationist Edward Avery “Ned” McIlhenny.

And yes, this is Louisiana.

There may be alligators.

Make it a full Louisiana field trip

Avery Island becomes even better when you combine Jungle Gardens with the nearby TABASCO experience.

Suddenly you've got:

Botany.

Wildlife.

Louisiana history.

Conservation.

Manufacturing.

Agriculture.

Food science.

And hot sauce.

That's basically an entire school day disguised as a road trip.

Just be aware that this is the longest drive on our list, so we'd treat Avery Island as a full-day adventure , not a quick afternoon outing.

Bonus Fall Idea: Let the Event Be the Destination

One thing we love about fall on the Northshore and Gulf Coast is that you don't necessarily need a permanent attraction at all.

October brings festivals, car shows, farmers markets, pumpkin patches, community events and outdoor concerts throughout Louisiana and Mississippi.

So some weekends, skip the elaborate plan.

Pick a town.

Find an event.

Get in the car.

Explore.

Eat something you're definitely not supposed to eat.

Buy something from a local vendor that you absolutely did not need.

Take the family picture.

Then head home.

Those often become the days everybody remembers.

Before You Head Out: Give the Family Car a Little Attention Too

Of course, we can't send you on ten road trips without putting on our Rock's Tire & Auto hats for a minute.

A 40-mile trip doesn't require the same preparation as driving across the country, but fall is still a great time to take a look at the vehicle that carried you through another brutal Louisiana summer.

Before a season full of family outings, pay attention to your:

Tires. Check pressure, tread and unusual wear.

Battery. Louisiana heat is tough on batteries, and sometimes the damage caused during summer doesn't become obvious until temperatures begin changing.

Oil and fluids. Make sure maintenance is up to date and investigate fluids that are repeatedly getting low.

Brakes. New noises, vibration or changes in pedal feel deserve attention.

Cooling system. Just because summer is ending doesn't mean a coolant leak stopped leaking.

And don't forget the little things—wiper blades, lights and your emergency kit.

You don't need to replace everything before taking a Sunday drive.

You just want to know what's going on with your vehicle.

That's the whole idea behind preventive car care: find things while you still have choices instead of waiting until your car chooses the time and place for you.

Fall Is for Making Memories—Even if It's Still 82 Degrees

One of the best things about living in Covington is how many completely different experiences are within a couple hours of home.

You can feed a giraffe in Folsom.

Hunt for vintage treasures in Hattiesburg.

Watch dolphins in Gulfport.

Walk through a botanical garden in New Orleans.

Spend the day surrounded by classic cars along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Take a boat into a Louisiana swamp.

Or make the longer drive to Avery Island and introduce the kids to one of Louisiana's most unique places.

You don't need an elaborate vacation.

Sometimes you just need a free Saturday, a full tank of gas and somebody willing to surrender control of the playlist.

So when that first little cool front finally arrives, go somewhere.

The Louisiana heat will be back soon enough.

Here in Louisiana, we know a good gumbo depends on using the right ingredients, in the right amounts, at the right time. Your vehicle works much the same way. The correct oil, coolant, brake fluid, tires, parts, and maintenance all work together to keep your car safe and reliable.

Unfortunately, some common car-care habits can upset that balance. Mixing incompatible coolants, putting off oil changes, using the wrong fluids, ignoring warning lights, driving on worn tires, overloading your vehicle, installing poor-quality parts, improperly jump-starting a battery, relying on temporary fixes, and skipping routine inspections can all lead to bigger problems.

The good news? You don't have to become a mechanic to take good care of your vehicle.

At Rock’s Tire & Auto in Covington, our goal is to help you understand what your vehicle needs, why it needs it, and what should be handled now versus what can be planned for later. Good car care isn't about replacing everything somebody recommends. It's about making informed decisions and giving your vehicle the right “ingredients” to do its job.

And around here, we know better than to put marshmallows in the gumbo.

Here in Louisiana, we take certain recipes seriously.

A great gumbo isn't something you make by opening the pantry, grabbing whatever catches your eye, throwing it all in a pot, and hoping for the best.

There's a method to it.

There's the roux. The seasoning. The vegetables. The stock. The meat or seafood. The timing.

Everyone's family recipe may be a little different—and we're certainly not getting in the middle of the great tomatoes-in-gumbo debate —but there are still some things that simply don't belong.

Swap the shrimp for marshmallows and tell your Maw Maw it's your “creative interpretation,” and you're probably eating dinner alone.

Your vehicle isn't all that different.

It has its own carefully engineered recipe.

Engine oil has a job. Coolant has a job. Brake fluid has a job. Transmission fluid has a job. Tires, belts, filters, batteries, sensors, and hundreds of other components all have specific purposes.

When the correct components and fluids work together, your vehicle can give you years of dependable service.

But start putting the wrong things in the wrong places, ignoring important maintenance, or trying shortcuts that were never intended to be permanent repairs, and that recipe can go sideways pretty quickly.

Sometimes the result is simply inconvenient.

Sometimes it's expensive.

And sometimes it can affect your safety.

So pull up a chair. We're stirring the pot and talking about 10 bad car-care habits we'd really like drivers to leave out of the recipe.

1. Mixing the Wrong Coolants

Coolant may look simple.

It's colorful liquid that goes into the cooling system. How complicated could it be?

Quite a bit, actually.

Modern vehicles can require different coolant formulations depending on the manufacturer, model, engine, and year. You'll see coolants in different colors—green, orange, yellow, blue, pink, purple—but color alone isn't a reliable way to determine whether two coolants are compatible.

That's an important point.

You shouldn't walk into a parts store, look under the hood, see orange coolant, and assume every orange bottle on the shelf is automatically correct.

Coolants contain different additive packages designed to protect the metals, seals, gaskets, water pumps, radiators, and other components used in a particular cooling system.

Mix incompatible formulations and you may reduce the coolant's protective properties. In some situations, incompatible products can contribute to deposits or contamination inside the cooling system.

That's where our gumbo rule comes in.

Chicken-and-sausage gumbo and seafood gumbo may both be delicious. That doesn't mean you dump half of each pot together and assume you've improved dinner.

What coolant actually does

Your coolant isn't there only to keep your engine from freezing.

In Louisiana, freezing probably isn't the first thing on most people's minds anyway.

Coolant helps:

Carry heat away from the engine
Raise the boiling point of the cooling system
Protect components against corrosion
Lubricate certain cooling-system components
Protect against freezing during cold weather

Your engine produces an enormous amount of heat. The cooling system has to manage that heat mile after mile, including when you're sitting on Highway 190 in August wondering whether the sun has personally declared war on St. Tammany Parish.

If that system can't do its job, overheating can cause serious engine damage.

The better recipe

Use the coolant specification required by your vehicle manufacturer , not simply a coolant that appears to be the right color.

If the coolant level is low and you don't know what belongs in the vehicle, ask before adding something.

And if you're repeatedly losing coolant, simply topping it off isn't solving the problem.

Coolant shouldn't routinely disappear. A low level can indicate a leak or another cooling-system concern that needs to be investigated.

2. Putting Off Oil Changes

If coolant helps manage heat, engine oil is one of the ingredients keeping all those moving engine parts from having a very bad day.

Oil lubricates internal components, helps control heat, carries contaminants toward the filter, and protects surfaces from wear.

Over time, however, oil becomes contaminated and its additives are depleted.

That's why an oil change isn't simply someone trying to sell you a fresh bottle of oil.

It's maintenance your engine was designed to receive.

What happens when you keep stretching the interval?

One missed oil change doesn't mean your engine will immediately explode in the Walmart parking lot.

But repeatedly running oil far beyond the appropriate interval can contribute to:

Increased engine wear
Sludge and deposit formation
Poor lubrication
Restricted oil passages
Timing-system problems on some engines
Increased oil consumption
Internal engine damage

In severe cases, lack of lubrication can eventually lead to catastrophic engine failure.

At that point, the money “saved” by skipping oil changes starts looking pretty insignificant next to an engine replacement.

But how often should you change your oil?

You've probably heard everything from:

“Every 3,000 miles!”

to:

“My cousin went 20,000 miles and his truck is fine.”

Neither is a universal maintenance schedule.

The appropriate interval depends on the vehicle, oil specification, driving conditions, manufacturer recommendations, mileage, and sometimes vehicle history.

Modern synthetic oils and oil-monitoring systems can allow longer intervals on many vehicles than were common years ago. On the other hand, frequent short trips, severe operating conditions, towing, extended idling, or other usage can affect maintenance needs.

At Rock's, we generally want the maintenance plan to fit your vehicle and how you actually use it.

That's more useful than giving every driver the exact same number.

Don't forget the oil level

Oil changes aren't the only thing that matters.

Some engines consume oil between services.

That means you can technically be “not due for an oil change” and still have an oil level that's dangerously low.

Checking the oil periodically—especially on a vehicle known to consume oil—is a good habit.

The better recipe

Follow an appropriate oil-change interval for your particular vehicle and check the oil level between services when needed.

And make sure the correct oil viscosity and specification are being used.

Which conveniently brings us to mistake number three.

3. Using the Wrong Oil or Other Fluids

Here's where automotive maintenance becomes a little less like making sweet tea.

You can't always substitute one ingredient because you ran out of another.

Today's vehicles use highly specific fluids.

Engine oils have different viscosities and specifications. Automatic transmissions can require very particular fluid formulations. Power-steering systems, transfer cases, differentials, brake systems, and cooling systems may each have their own requirements.

Putting in “something close enough” isn't always close enough.

Engine oil is more than 5W-30 versus 0W-20

Those familiar numbers describe viscosity characteristics, but modern manufacturers can also require oils meeting particular performance standards.

Using oil that doesn't meet the correct requirements may affect lubrication, emissions equipment, fuel economy, variable valve timing systems, turbochargers, or other components.

This doesn't mean you should panic if you've ever switched oil brands.

Brand isn't the primary issue.

Correct specification is.

And the old idea that synthetic and conventional oil can never be mixed isn't quite accurate. Many engine oils are chemically compatible. The more important question is whether the finished oil in the engine meets the manufacturer's required viscosity and specifications.

When in doubt, use what the vehicle manufacturer calls for.

Transmission fluid is especially important

People sometimes assume transmission fluid is transmission fluid.

Unfortunately, transmissions didn't get that memo.

Different transmissions use different fluid characteristics. Some require fluids designed for a specific transmission family or manufacturer.

Using the wrong fluid can affect shift quality, lubrication, hydraulic operation, seals, and component life.

That's a potentially expensive experiment.

The better recipe

Before adding any fluid yourself, know:

What fluid is low? Why is it low? And exactly what specification does the vehicle require?

If you're unsure, don't guess.

Asking a question is much cheaper than correcting the wrong answer.

4. Forgetting About Brake Fluid

Most drivers know brake pads wear out.

Far fewer think about the fluid transferring force through the hydraulic brake system every time they press the pedal.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it can absorb moisture over time.

As moisture content increases, the fluid's boiling point can decrease and internal corrosion protection can be affected.

Under normal driving, you may never notice a dramatic difference.

But braking generates heat, particularly during repeated or heavy braking. Brake fluid needs to perform consistently under those conditions.

Does everyone need brake fluid every two years?

Not necessarily.

Brake-fluid service recommendations vary by vehicle manufacturer. Some manufacturers specify intervals. Others recommend inspection or testing rather than a universal mileage or time interval.

That's why we prefer testing and manufacturer guidance rather than automatically declaring every vehicle needs brake fluid at exactly the same age.

When we evaluate it, we're looking at the actual condition of the system and the vehicle's maintenance requirements.

That's part of an important philosophy at Rock's:

Maintenance should have a reason behind it.

You should understand why something is being recommended.

Why brake fluid matters

Your brake system is one place where shortcuts aren't worth taking.

Contaminated or deteriorated fluid can contribute to corrosion within hydraulic components and may affect braking performance under demanding conditions.

The braking system should be considered as a complete system—not simply pads.

That includes:

Pads
Rotors
Calipers
Hoses
Hydraulic components
Brake fluid
ABS components
Related hardware

Bald may look good on Rock.

That makes tire condition pretty important.

Tread isn't just about passing inspection

Tread channels water away from the tire's contact patch.

As tread wears down, the tire has less ability to manage water.

And if there's one thing Louisiana knows how to produce besides good food, it's rain.

A summer thunderstorm can turn a dry road into standing water in minutes.

Reduced tread depth increases the risk of hydroplaning and can lengthen stopping distances on wet pavement.

Don't only inspect the outside edge

Here's something we regularly encounter:

A client looks at the outside of the tire and sees plenty of tread.

Everything looks fine.

Then the vehicle goes on the lift and the inside edge is worn nearly to the cords.

Alignment issues, worn suspension components, incorrect tire pressure, or other conditions can create uneven wear that isn't obvious when you're standing beside the car.

That's one reason a proper vehicle inspection can catch problems that a quick walk-around misses.

Tire damage matters too

Tread depth isn't the only concern.

Watch for:

Bulges or bubbles
Sidewall cuts
Cracking
Exposed cords
Uneven wear
Repeated pressure loss
Punctures
Vibration
Signs of impact damage

A bulge in a tire indicates internal structural damage and isn't something to “keep an eye on until next month.”

About that penny test...

The penny test is familiar, but a tread-depth gauge is more accurate and inexpensive.

6. Ignoring Dashboard Warning Lights

Dashboard lights are your vehicle's way of trying to communicate with you.

Unfortunately, they speak mostly in hieroglyphics.

There's the little engine.

The horseshoe-looking tire.

The oil can.

The thermometer.

The ABS letters.

And every now and then, something that appears to have been designed specifically to make you search Google while sitting at a red light.

The important thing to understand is that not all warning lights mean the same thing.

A check-engine light isn't automatically an emergency

A steady check-engine light often indicates that the vehicle's computer has detected a fault and stored diagnostic information.

That doesn't automatically mean:

“Pull over immediately.”

But it also shouldn't be ignored indefinitely.

The fault may involve emissions, engine performance, fuel control, ignition, sensors, or another monitored system.

A flashing check-engine light is different

A flashing check-engine light can indicate a condition such as a severe misfire that may damage the catalytic converter.

That deserves more urgent attention.

Some warning lights mean STOP

An oil-pressure warning or overheating warning can indicate a condition capable of causing serious engine damage very quickly.

If your vehicle is overheating or has lost oil pressure, continuing to drive because you're “only five minutes from home” can turn a repairable problem into a ruined engine.

And a code isn't a diagnosis

This is another mistake worth mentioning.

Someone plugs in a scanner and gets:

P0-something-something.

Then immediately declares:

“You need an oxygen sensor.”

Not necessarily.

A diagnostic trouble code identifies a condition the computer has detected. It gives the technician a starting point.

It does not always identify the failed component.

Our favorite way to put it is:

A scanner gives us a clue. Testing gives us the answer.

The better recipe

Pay attention to warning lights.

If you aren't sure whether it's safe to continue driving, ask.

And when diagnosis is needed, determine the actual cause instead of replacing parts based solely on a code description.

7. Overloading Your Vehicle

We understand.

Sometimes you're helping somebody move.

Sometimes you're heading to the hunting camp.

Sometimes you've gone to Costco for “three things” and somehow emerge with enough merchandise to establish a small independent nation.

But every vehicle has weight limits.

Those limits aren't suggestions placed on the door sticker because engineers had extra room.

Extra weight affects more than suspension

Overloading can increase stress on:

Wheel bearings
Suspension

Transmission

Remember: adding weight doesn't magically make your brakes larger.

If what you're carrying exceeds what the vehicle was designed for, use a vehicle or trailer properly equipped for the job.

8. Choosing Replacement Parts Based Only on the Lowest Price

Everybody wants to save money.

We do too.

But there's a difference between getting good value and simply buying the cheapest component available.

Automotive parts can vary significantly in construction, materials, tolerances, warranty support, and expected service life.

Not every aftermarket part is bad.

In fact, many high-quality aftermarket manufacturers make excellent components.

Likewise, “OEM” isn't automatically necessary for every repair.

If it wears prematurely, you don't just buy the part again.

You don't need another vehicle.

You don't have two cars positioned awkwardly in a parking lot.

Many modern units include safeguards that reduce the likelihood of incorrect connections.

They're convenient and useful.

But you still need to follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Here's the bigger mistake: assuming a dead battery means you need a battery

A car won't start.

Someone jumps it.

Therefore:

“Battery's bad.”

Maybe.

But not always.

A no-start or discharged battery can result from:

An aging battery
Charging-system problems

Small clues can reveal developing problems

For example:

A slight coolant seep may eventually become a significant leak.

Uneven tire wear may point toward an alignment or suspension issue.

A torn CV boot may eventually allow contamination into the joint.

A weak battery may pass today but be nearing the end of its usable life.

Brake pads may still be safe but getting close enough that you can plan for replacement.

Fix-a-Flat and tire sealants

Emergency tire sealants may occasionally help someone get out of a difficult situation, depending on the product, tire, puncture, and vehicle manufacturer's guidance.

But they aren't the same thing as a proper tire repair.

A tire needs to be removed and inspected to determine whether the damage is actually repairable.

Not every puncture can be repaired.

Location matters.

Size matters.

Internal damage matters.

Driving on the tire while low or flat matters.
